Animal Management
DOG MANAGEMENT
The Wagait Shire Council Dog Management By-Laws are an initiative to improve the safety of our community and the amenity, accessibility and usability of our public spaces. Full implementation of the bylaws commenced on 1 September 2020 following a local campaign for dog registration and responsible animal management in August 2020.
The Bylaws state that dogs in Wagait Beach must be registered with Council and special permits are required for more than two dogs on any property and declared or dangerous dogs. Registration is renewed annually on the 31 August and registration is transferrable within the year if you relocate to another local government area in the Top End.
The Council dog register, tagging and microchipping assists Council to identify domestic dogs in the community and enable a dog-friendly and safe community for residents, their pets and the local wildlife.
Should your dog escape your property or become lost, please contact Council on 8978 5185 or email council@wagait.nt.gov.au to make a lost dog report. Your details will be entered into the lost dog register, which will assist us in identifying you as the owner should your dog be found or reported to Council officials.
For any other domestic pets in the Wagait Shire, Council defers to the following legislation:
